Keeping Track of HS Kids for the Military

As part of what Nick Burbules and I are calling the "military-educational complex," here's a news blip (thanks to Nick for the link).

UD is spot on...

University Diarist Margaret Soltan gets it right and aptly put...on the larger issues of the Duke lax case, beyond the minutiae of Fox, MSNBC, CNN coverage...

That a number of the players drive SUVs slightly less gargantuan than Hummers, for instance, is not an innocent fact. I don’t have to leave it alone for fear of being labeled a stereotyper. Some people like aggressive and intimidating cars because these cars reflect their own propensity toward violence. Liking to scare and intimidate other people and flaunt their superiority to them, these same people tend to purchase vast and expensive houses that make people who enter them feel small, overwhelmed by the thought of their owners’ financial muscle.

Is there a word for these people? Yes. It’s “Americans.” Millions of Americans are like this. They use their considerable wealth to shut out the non-wealthy world and to keep it at arm’s length when they have to be out and about in it (hence the virtually armored cars). They raise their children with a sense of their untouchable superiority to others.

Gettin' through...playin' the game...

Mary McKinney's review of a lewd 'n rude guide for graduate students to get through...here's a snippet.

Frank n’ Stein point out that you should choose your dissertation chair and committee wisely. Yes, this advice is obvious, but it is amazing how many students I work with have picked their main professor on the basis of scholarly expertise, despite evidence that the person is a narcissistic jerk. With funny (and accurate) profiles of typical professors, the authors explain in detail what you should be looking for and what you should avoid when choosing your dissertation advisor. You’ve got to dodge inattentive, incompetent and malevolent advisors in order to get out. And they point out the often-overlooked importance of making sure your committee members work well together.

What am I missing?

An article in today's CHE, subscribers only, but soon available, presents the AMAZING discovery by some that you can find out an author's identity in Microsoft Word by going to the summary in Properties, if that person has not excised it. As a journal editor, I knew this. Why is this such a discovery for some? The article presents this as a threat to the double blind review (please, can we say "anonymous" and get rid of "blind"...please?)

What am I missing here? This seems duh to me.

Will come up for air soon

Been away from blogging Moo2 for a while...busy with work, writing a book chapter (several times, but it is one of my best pieces), two encyclopedia entries, travel, and on. I need to get back, gotta get my bloggin' jones back in gear.

Off to AERA end of this week, just back from a trip to Florida working here, which is situated here.
